What is Therapeutic Yoga?

Yoga therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and wellbeing through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga. -International Association of Yoga Therapists

The practice of therapeutic yoga honors the integration of the principles and teachings of yoga with Western science and medicine.

Yoga therapy is the application of the ancient science of yoga to enhance health and wellness at all levels of the person and is applicable to groups or individuals with specific health challenges*. Yoga therapy is a part of the process of achieving optimal health along the journey of transformation – the yoga journey. Therapeutic yoga focuses on your overall well being and places equal emphasis on the physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions.

How does a Yoga Therapist work?

Clients usually find Mary through referral from physicians and physical therapists, or as self-referral. Mary conducts her sessions at yoga studios in McLean, in the student’s home or a health care provider’s office.

As a teacher of therapeutic yoga, Mary works with her clients to design a program for optimal health based on their specific needs. As appropriate, Mary works in partnership with a team of providers that is dedicated to supporting the client’s journey towards health and healing.

The first session is ideally 90 minutes long and subsequent sessions range from 60 to 75 minutes in length.
